Over 20 animals removed from 'unsanitary conditions' by BernCo, BCSO

More than 20 pets were removed from a South Valley property Thursday after reports that some of the animals were in “poor condition.”

On Aug. 26, Bernalillo County Animal Care Services received a call that multiple dogs were living in unsanitary conditions, according to a news release from county spokesperson Tiffany Chamblee. Officers who were dispatched spoke with a person there, who said the owner was hospitalized and would not be able to address the situation.

Two days later, a woman called the county to ask for help with the animals, saying there were roughly 30 on the property, the release said. Officers met the woman but could not enter the property without a warrant or the owner’s consent.

“Further investigation revealed that Animal Care was contacted by Bernalillo County Fire Rescue after responding to a medical call at the property on Aug. 25, where personnel observed more than 20 dogs in poor condition,” the release stated. Officers were able to use the call to get a warrant.

On Wednesday, officers served the warrant and spoke with the owner, who had returned from the hospital, the release said. The woman surrendered 20 dogs and two cats. She kept five dogs.

All the animals were in good health, but were living in unsanitary conditions, Chamblee said. All of the surrendered animals will be evaluated and put up for adoption.

The Bernalillo County shelter currently has 360 animals, with 116 available to adopt and 133 in foster care.
