Over 300 pounds of food donated during car meet fundraiser for local food pantry
Albuquerque resident Rick Gutierrez brought his 1958 Chevrolet Apache and 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS to the U.S. Eagle Federal Credit Union parking lot off Coors Sunday for a cause.
He was one of dozens of people who showcased vibrant cars at the credit union on Sunday during a fundraiser for the Rio Grande Food Project.
“I like to help anybody,” Gutierrez said.
A couple hours later, about 300 pounds of food was donated to the food pantry, which will provide for over 250 meals, Rio Grande Food Project Executive Director Ari Herring said.
The Rio Grande Food Project is a 501(3) that provides free groceries to thousands of people every year, along with additional services and resources to address the causes of food insecurity, according to the nonprofit’s website.
“This is such a huge help,” Herring said. “Our numbers at the (pantry) keeps on increasing as folks have trouble paying for enough food to really provide for their families.”
Sunday’s fundraiser was put together by the U.S. Eagle Federal Credit Union and its junior board of directors. The board is comprised of local people ages 16–22 who are interested in leadership, community outreach and financial literacy.
The program is designed to teach them about the rewards and responsibilities of sitting on a corporate board of directors; help them develop leadership skills; and teach them how credit unions engage with communities, according to the credit union’s website.
“It’s really cool to see how we can make an impact on the community,” said junior board of director Santi Huggins.
