Person found dead after house fire in Northeast Albuquerque
A person was found dead after a garage caught fire in Northeast Albuquerque on Tuesday afternoon.
“I want to express my condolences to the family,” AFR spokesman Lt. Jason Fejer said during a Tuesday afternoon news conference. “... This is the kind of news we hate to report, but it’s the reality of the job.”
At 2:51 p.m., AFR responded to a call of a garage fire in the 9600 block of McKnight NE, near Indian School and Moon.
Resident Joyce Griffith said a neighbor told her they heard a “very loud explosion,” then saw smoke come out of the garage.
When firefighters arrived, they saw the fire and smoke and broke into the garage. They found a person and pulled them out, Fejer said.
“They were beyond help at that point,” he said.
The fire was brought under control in 15 minutes, according to an AFR news release. The fire and damages were mostly contained to the garage, authorities said.
AFR did not release the person’s identity, but Griffith said it was an older man in his 80s who she remembered seeing at the store or on the street.
“He’d go by in his truck (and) he’d wave to me,” Griffith said. “He lived here for many years. It just breaks my heart.”
No firefighters were injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Fejer said.
