Pharmaceutical company with Albuquerque ties recalls nasal spray for contamination
Decongestant tests positive for yeast, mold, bacteria
A homeopathic pharmaceutical company with an Albuquerque manufacturing facility is recalling a natural nasal spray after the product was found to contain yeast, mold and unwanted bacteria.
One lot of MediNatura New Mexico's ReBoost nasal spray was contaminated, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which announced the nationwide voluntary recall Wednesday.
MediNatura management did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
No adverse effects have been reported after using the nasal spray, though there is "a reasonable probability" that consuming the product could harm one's health, the announcement said. Life-threatening infections are possible if used by someone with a compromised immune system.
MediNatura's ReBoost spray is marketed as a homeopathic, nonaddictive nasal decongestant and contains several herbs and supplements. FDA officials said that in addition to yeast and mold, tests showed contamination with Achromobacter bacteria, a pathogen found in water and soil.
All customers should immediately discontinue use of the spray, FDA officials said. Those who purchased it directly from MediNatura should contact the company directly for a refund. Otherwise, customers should return it to the retailer where it was purchased.
MediNatura's Albuquerque headquarters near Sandia Science & Technology Park includes a factory with around 30 employees, according to the company's website.
