New Mexico State Police on Monday apprehended a suspect in Española who was wanted for a shooting death in Santa Fe a day earlier.

Santa Fe Police Department said Antonio Montejano, 24, of Santa Fe was being transported to Santa Fe to be interviewed by SFPD detectives on Monday evening. Española police and the NMSP Tactical Team assisted in the arrest, Santa Fe police said.

NMSP and Española police also located Nikki Marie Jo Mascareñas, Montejano's girlfriend. Mascareñas is "safe and is no longer considered to be missing," a statement from Santa Fe police said.

Earlier, Santa Fe Deputy Chief Benjamin Valdez said Mascareñas, 25, was reported missing Sunday after her family could not reach her on the phone. Police believed, based on information from the family, that she likely was with Montejano involuntarily and could be in danger due to a past violent history between the two.

Police said they responded at about 3 a.m. Sunday to a call of a man shot during an argument in the 3700 block of Camino Tierra Real, near Airport Road and Aqua Fria Street in Santa Fe. The caller also told police the suspect — later identified as Montejano — ran south after the incident. Rosendo Romero, 40, of Albuquerque, was the shooting victim and died on the scene, police said.

Valdez said Montejano fled with a firearm used in the shooting.
