State Police: Alamogordo-area homeowner shoots man during break-in
A homeowner shot and killed a man who broke into the family residence in southern New Mexico on Saturday, according to New Mexico State Police.
Lucas Eli Moore, 45, was found dead by emergency responders at the home in La Luz, just north of Alamogordo. The homeowner currently faces no charges in the homicide.
Based on the initial investigation by police, at around 8:50 p.m., Moore was banging on an outside door, which awoke the 39-year-old homeowner and his 38-year-old wife. Moore broke open the door, entered and went to the kitchen near the children’s bedrooms, the police news release said.
The armed homeowner told Moore to leave multiple times, at which point Moore tried to hit the homeowner, police said. The homeowner then fired “at least one round” from a handgun, striking Moore. Moore collapsed, and the homeowner called 911, according to the release.
The family was unharmed, including the couple’s three small children, who stayed in their bedrooms during the incident.
State Police are still investigating the incident.
