State Police investigate Roswell police shooting that left man injured
New Mexico State Police is investigating a shooting involving a City of Roswell officer that left one man wounded, the department said Wednesday.
Roswell police officers were dispatched around 8 a.m. Tuesday to an Allsup's convenience store near North Main Street after receiving a call that a man and woman were involved in a domestic dispute, according to a news release from State Police spokesperson Amanda Richards.
The man was "being aggressive with the female and possibly pointed a black handgun at her, then placed it in his shorts," Richards said. Roswell police arrived and found the man, 27-year-old Andrew Lopez-Cobos, hiding behind a dumpster.
When officers approached, Lopez-Cobos ran, Richards said. Officers chased Lopez-Cobos and told him to stop, but he ignored the commands. Instead, Lopez-Cobos pointed a gun at police and an officer fired "at least one shot from his duty weapon," Richards said.
The officer is on administrative leave while State Police investigates the incident, according to Roswell Police Department spokesperson Todd Wildermuth. The officer has been with the department for roughly four years, and it is unknown if he had a prior history of police shootings.
Lopez-Cobos was taken into custody and airlifted to a Texas hospital. Police believe the gunshot was a "non-life-threatening injury," according to a Tuesday news release from RPD.
Lopez-Cobbs was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of drug paraphernalia and other charges.
Tuesday was not Lopez-Cobos' first encounter with law enforcement. In 2023, Lopez-Cobos pleaded no contest to battery on a peace officer.
