Sunport receives $3.6M in federal funding for road and safety improvements

Travelers coming to and from the Albuquerque International Sunport will have smoother and safer roads to drive on.

On Wednesday, the airport announced the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP) is allocating about $3.7 million to go toward milling and overlaying Sunport Boulevard and putting down a new asphalt road surface between the Interstate 25 interchange and Sunport terminal loop.

“This means safer driving in wet weather, less spray from tires, and quieter roads,” Sunport Marketing Coordinator Diana Lopez said.

Construction is slated to begin later in the year, she said.

The Sunport was one of three airports to receive a combined $4.3 million in federal funding for upgrades.

The others were Socorro Municipal Airport ($600,000) and Artesia Municipal Airport ($128,250), according to a Sen. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., news release.

“Our airports are vital lifelines for trade, tourism, and connecting our communities and friends outside of New Mexico,” Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., said in a statement. “This $4.3 million for infrastructure updates for three airports across the state ... will ensure they (remain) safe and efficient hubs for New Mexicans and visitors.”

The Airport Improvement Program’s airport grant program funds airport infrastructure projects such as runways, taxiways, airport signage, airport lighting and airport markings.

“Sunport Boulevard is a vital corridor that sees thousands of vehicles each day, connecting travelers to flights, family, and opportunity,” city Aviation Director Richard McCurley said in a news release. “This project ensures that we continue delivering a safe, smooth, and welcoming experience from the moment visitors arrive. We are thankful to the FAA and our congressional delegation for their continued support.”
