An 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to carjack a vehicle at a park in Northwest Albuquerque Saturday morning.

Kash Brown, 18, is charged with auto burglary, assault and conspiracy to commit a felony. Brown is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center. He does not yet have an attorney.

Officers were dispatched around 6:45 a.m. to the Ventana Ranch Park on 10000 Universe NW, near Paradise, in response to an attempted car theft, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.

Police spoke with the owner of the vehicle, who said he was preparing a field for an upcoming children's soccer game when he saw three young men, including Brown, inside of his truck taking items.

When the man confronted the group, Brown went to punch the man but missed, according to the complaint. The man hit Brown and knocked him unconscious.

The other two men, who were leaving the park in a vehicle, turned around to confront the man. One of the three males, who was not identified, pointed a gun at the man and asked him "if he wanted to die," according to the complaint.

The man told police he picked Brown up to use him as a shield and the men fired two gunshots into the air as they left the park in another vehicle, the complaint states. Officers recovered the stolen items and took Brown into custody.
