Teen girl from Hobbs found dead in Juárez

A teenager from New Mexico was found dead in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, after her family received ransom demands from her kidnappers.

On July 16, the 17-year-old — identified by the initials DCLL.G. — left New Mexico to visit friends in Mexico, according to a news release from the Government of the State of Chihuahua.

Three days later, the teenager’s family received messages through WhatsApp demanding money in exchange for her safety and freedom. The messages also included videos and photos of the girl being held captive.

The girl was from Hobbs, KVIA-TV reported. The Hobbs Police Department was not available for comment Wednesday due to their phone lines being down.

Mexican officials launched an investigation on July 22 and found a home on Sierra Moncayo Street in the UrbiVilla del Cedro subdivision — located in southern Ciudad Juárez — with dirt that had been moved, according to the release. The teenager was buried 2 feet underground, and an autopsy revealed she had been strangled to death.

The case, which was originally being handled by a specialized unit that focuses on gender-based crimes, was transferred over to the Mexican Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
