Teens accused of attacking family, pregnant woman at a Santa Fe fast-food restaurant
Five teenagers are accused of attacking a pregnant woman and her family at a fast-food restaurant in southwest Santa Fe on Thursday morning.
The group was made up of two boys, ages 15 and 16, from Santa Fe, and three girls, two 14 and one 13, from Albuquerque, according to the Santa Fe Police Department. They were accompanied by a 19-year-old man who wasn’t charged.
Santa Fe Police responded around 9 a.m. to the Burger King in the 3400 block of Zafarano Drive after receiving a report that six juveniles, possibly armed with a gun or knife, had attacked a family.
“The family that was attacked included a father, his pregnant wife and their young child who were customers eating at the Burger King,” according to a news release from SFPD. “The mother was taken to a local hospital for medical care. Her injuries immediately known at this time are an injury to her eye as a result of being struck by the hands and feet of the three juvenile females.”
Officers detained the juveniles near the scene and none of them were armed, according to Deputy Chief of Police Ben Valdez, a SFPD spokesperson. The “suspected firearm was quickly located in a backyard nearby that was believed to have been discarded by the juveniles.”
Valdez did not say what precipitated the incident.
He said the charges against the juveniles include indecent exposure, assault with intent to commit a violent felony, tampering with evidence, child endangerment, battery, unlawful carrying of a firearm for a person under 19, minor under the influence and disorderly conduct.
The two teen boys had warrants for their arrest and were booked into the San Juan County Juvenile Detention Facility, Valdez said. The Juvenile Probation Office “did not authorize” the arrest of the three girls and they were released to their families.
