LAS CRUCES — Two boys, 16 and 17 years old, were arrested Thursday morning after city police and federal agents executed a pair of search warrants and discovered the youths in possession of 10 firearms, bulletproof vests and an undisclosed amount of fentanyl.

The warrants were executed by a task force comprising units of the Las Cruces Police Department, FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The two defendants — unidentified because they are minors — are being held without bond in the juvenile section of the Doña Ana County Detention Center. Las Cruces police said the arrests stemmed from an investigation into suspected gang activity and juvenile crime.

Police did not disclose how much fentanyl was discovered, nor offer details on the 10 weapons seized, though it reported that two of the firearms had been confirmed as stolen.

An LCPD-provided photograph of some of the evidence showed five handguns with ammunition magazines and one rifle, along with four ballistic vests.

“The task force is continuing its investigation and additional arrests are possible,” LCPD stated in a Friday news release.
