Three people killed in crashes over 24-hour span in Albuquerque
Two people on foot and one bicyclist were killed in separate crashes across Albuquerque on Friday night and Saturday.
Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said one driver called 911 to report the incident and waited for officers, while another driver fled. The third crash involved a city bus, and the driver remained at the scene.
Police responded to the first crash around 6:30 p.m. Friday. Officers dispatched to the 2300 block of Second SW, south of Bridge, found a man fatally injured and lying on the road. The driver returned to the scene and spoke with detectives.
The investigation found the man was lying across the road when the driver ran over him while headed south on Second, Gallegos said.
Several hours later, around 11:30 p.m, officers were called to Lomas and Stanford NE, where a person had been fatally struck. The person was taken to a hospital, where they died.
The investigation determined the vehicle was headed west on Lomas and the pedestrian was “crawling in the roadway when the crash occurred,” Gallegos said.
“The driver continued westbound, and did not stop,” he said.
Gallegos said the investigations into both crashes are ongoing, “with all evidence collected and secured by detectives for further analysis.”
On Saturday, around 5:20 p.m., officers responded to a crash on Tramway NE, near Interstate 40, and found a bicyclist with head injuries. He died at a hospital.
Gallegos said the crash involved a city bus and that the cyclist crashed into the bus. APD’s Fatal Crash team has started an investigation into what led to the crash.
