Today at the Roundhouse, Feb. 12
It’s officially past the three-week mark of the legislative session. As bills start moving to the House and Senate floors and committee schedules get longer and longer, here’s what to watch for at the Roundhouse on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
Crime: This year’s expected crime package, under House Bill 8, is going before the Senate Judiciary Committee in the afternoon. A slew of crime-related proposals are expected to be rolled into the package, though changes are likely to be made as the bill progresses.
Taxes: House Bill 14 would replace the working families tax credit with an earned income tax credit, increasing eligibility for taxpayers without children and increasing the amount of tax credit accumulated per wages earned, according to a legislative analysis. The House Commerce and Economic Development Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. to debate the proposal, which is first on the schedule.
Election changes: A few bills seeking to change election processes are in the Senate Rules Committee in the morning. The 57-page-long Senate Bill 218 would amend a number of education procedures, including special election procedures. Senate Bill 16 would allow voters not registered to a major political party to participate in primary elections.
