A toddler was run over and killed after falling out of a vehicle in an auto parts store parking lot over the weekend in Edgewood.

The Edgewood Police Department did not identify the child who died in the incident that happened around 6:40 p.m. Sunday. At that time, officers were dispatched to AutoZone after receiving a call that a 2-year-old child had fallen out of a vehicle, according to a news release from Edgewood Police Chief Aaron Frost.

"The driver of the vehicle was leaving the AutoZone parking lot and hit an uneven spot, which caused the passenger door to open and the child to fall out onto the ground," he said. "The child was then run over by the vehicle."

The Santa Fe County Fire Department took the child to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where they died from their injuries, Frost said.

The Edgewood Police Department did not answer additional questions, citing a pending investigation.
