A man is accused of fatally hitting two bicyclists with his pickup while under the influence of alcohol in San Juan County on Saturday.

Jaron Todecheeny, 35, of Aztec, is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to maintain a traffic lane, driving while license was revoked and no proof of insurance.

He was booked into the San Juan County Adult Detention Center, San Juan County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Rebekah Click said in a news release.

In October, Todecheeny was arrested after allegedly driving while intoxicated, according to court records. His trial is scheduled to start May 30. In 2022, Todecheeny pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence and received a suspended sentence.

Around 1:50 a.m. on Saturday, the San Juan County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a fatal crash near mile marker 27 on Navajo Route 36, outside Shiprock. When deputies arrived, they learned a man and a woman were riding their bicycles when they were fatally hit by a 2006 Ford Ranger driven by Todecheeny, Click said.

Todecheeny was arrested after deputies said he had been under the influence of alcohol, she said.

The bicyclists' identifications are not being released until their next of kin have been notified, Click said.
