Two men are accused of shooting a woman in the head over a motorcycle in Southeast Albuquerque in early July.

Nicholas Lucio, 43, of Albuquerque, and Matthew Mitchem, 49, of Los Lunas, are charged with an open count of murder and conspiracy in the July 2 shooting death of 36-year-old Ann Marie Chaires.

Mitchem was arrested on July 11 and Lucio was arrested late Saturday, Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said in a news release Sunday night. Both men are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

On July 2, three masked men — including Lucio and Mitchem — confronted Chaires at an apartment in the 1000 block of Madeira SE, near San Mateo and Kathryn, according to police.

A witness told police one of the men left his inoperable Harley-Davidson at the apartment for “safekeeping,” Gallegos said.

Lucio and Mitchem accused Chaires of selling the bike, which she denied, and demanded she take them to get it back, Gallegos said. Witnesses told police one of the men then shot her in the head with a handgun, Gallegos said.

Chaires died at the scene, he said.

Detectives said Mitchem — also known as “Bam Bam” — had owned the motorcycle and made arrangements to store it at the apartment weeks before the shooting, Gallegos said.

Police didn’t release any information about a third suspect.
