Two people die in crash off US 550 in Rio Rancho
A major highway was closed for several hours after a two-vehicle crash that killed two people in Rio Rancho.
At about 2:15 p.m., RRPD and Rio Rancho Fire Rescue responded to a call of a crash at U.S. Highway 550 and Northwest Loop.
RRPD Capt. Jacquelynn Reedy said a Dodge Challenger with three people inside was heading east on 550 when it hit a Cadillac with two occupants attempting to turn west onto 550 from Northwest Loop.
Two of the Challenger's occupants died from injuries at the scene. The other occupants were taken to a local hospital and are in serious condition.
Reedy said police are not releasing the names of the victims until they notify their next of kin.
Drugs and alcohol are not being suspected and the investigation remains ongoing, she said.
"Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and community members affected by today’s tragedy," Reedy said. "Additionally, we want to expressed our pride and appreciation to all officers, firefighters, and medical personnel who worked tirelessly to save the lives of those involved."
