A 2-year-old boy was fatally shot inside a Southeast Albuquerque apartment Sunday afternoon.

The shooting is still being investigated.

Just before 3 p.m., officers responded to a call of a gunshot inside an apartment in the area of Buena Vista and Gibson.

The boy’s mother told dispatch she was inside the apartment when she heard a “loud bang” and realized her son had been shot, Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said during a Sunday afternoon news conference.

When police arrived, they found the boy with a gunshot wound to his chest, Gallegos said. First responders tried CPR but were unsuccessful, police said.

There were several people who were staying at the apartment at the time of the incident and are being interviewed, he said. Police are waiting on a warrant to check the apartment and look for more evidence, Gallegos said.

“At this point, the details are very fuzzy,” he said, but detectives “are very thorough” and will get to the bottom of what happened.

“It’s a tragedy,” Gallegos said. “A 2 year old lost their life to gun violence.”
