Vapes on a plane! Santa Fe man who set off lavatory smoke alarm greeted by authorities, police say

A man who took a few puffs in a plane lavatory and set off the smoke alarm Wednesday afternoon was greeted by authorities upon arrival in Santa Fe.

Santa Fe Deputy Chief Ben Valdez said the flight's schedule was delayed because of the man's antics and a report was "in the process of being submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration … for further evaluation."

Valdez did not say if the vaper, who is 30 and from Santa Fe, would face charges.

"The Santa Fe Police Department emphasizes the importance of adhering to airline regulations for the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew members," he said in an email.

Valdez said officers responded about 4:20 p.m. to the Santa Fe Regional Airport following "an incident onboard an inbound American Airlines aircraft."

"It was reported that a passenger, subsequently identified as a 30-year-old male resident of Santa Fe, utilized a vape pen in the aircraft's lavatory, triggering the onboard smoke detection system," he said.

Valdez said the plane landed safely and officers "promptly contacted the individual in question."

"Due to the FAA's stringent no-smoking and no-vaping regulations, this incident necessitated a delay in the flight's schedule to allow for the servicing of the smoke detection system by the airline," he said.
