Woman dies while behind bars at Bernalillo County jail

Published Modified

A Metropolitan Detention Center inmate who had been booked into the jail a few days earlier died Wednesday.

At about 5:30 a.m., a 45-year-old woman was found unresponsive, MDC spokesperson Candace Hopkins said in a news release.

She died 18 minutes later, after MDC staff and first responders unsuccessfully attempted life-saving measures on the woman, she said.

MDC will not release the woman’s name until they have notified her family of her death, Hopkins said.

The woman had been booked into MDC on Monday morning, she said. Hopkins did not say what the woman was booked into jail for or give any other details.

The incident is being investigated by the MDC Office of Professional Standards and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the cause of the woman’s death, Hopkins said.

Since 2020, 36 people have died at MDC or died after falling ill at the facility.
