OPINION: Speak Up!

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Let us all remember and reflect on these words. CM

DEMOCRAT LEGISLATORS in Washington are complaining that they’re being sent home and can’t do any work to help the taxpayers. What have they been doing up until today? Digging in their heels and refusing to work with President Trump and Republicans. “Trump Bad” is a bad policy hill to die on. AN

Being an independent in the state of NM, I find it interesting that the national media is so concerned with the DISTRICT VOTING ALIGNMENTS in Texas whereas two years ago in NM, the matter was largely ignored. LAH

Rep. Vasquez is frustrated by lack of access to an ICE FACILITY and states that “...we’re a nation of law and order...”. Apparently he’s not so frustrated by the disastrous unlawful open border policies that encouraged mass illegal immigration and required the use of these facilities in the first place. SM

Often we hear politicians like Amy Barrett decry “PROFITS OVER PEOPLE.” Such statements demonstrate incredible ignorance of economics. Investment and profits drive commercialization of ideas that enhance our standard of living. People don’t start businesses to create jobs. They create businesses to make money. Without profit there are no jobs. BB

Trump claims he has brought down the PRICE OF EGGS by 400% and the price of prescriptions by 1,500%. Since a 100% reduction would bring the price to zero, 400 or 1,500 means we should get paid for purchases of eggs and prescriptions. Where is my check? AF

Trump has either completely stopped the FUNDING or drastically reduced it for DEI, higher ed, Head Start, PBS, federal aid and student loans, and the list goes on. Apparently only rich people have the right to be educated. He truly wants to make Americans stupid . CC

Should I get twisted in knots over CORRUPTION IN UKRAINE? I would much rather delve into the corruption in the US government and its many agencies. CE

Trump claims Bill Clinton went to EPSTEIN’S ISLAND 28 times. This means either Trump saw him there 28 times, Trump has documents which he won’t release that say Clinton was there 28 times, or Trump is just plain lying. Anyone want to guess which one? AF

Regarding “OPINION: Speak Up!” (Aug. 3 Journal): “When are people going to get TRUMP‘s ‘abysmal history’? For some people, the answer is never. For them, POTUS seems to be some ‘macho messiah’ sent to save America. Others see an authoritarian dictator wannabe who grabs power and money for himself. Bad leader. MY

So our president will soon demolish the EAST WING of the White House and replace it with a $200 million ballroom similar to the one in Mar-a-lago. Will an announcement of his coronation soon follow? GEM

ALBUQUERQUE JUSTICE: you can kill a person in the city of Albuquerque, go to trial, get convicted, and be back on the street in 20 years and they call it justice. Oh that’s Albuquerque justice. NC

No matter how much UNM says they have spent on security it’s still not enough and maybe they are spending it on the wrong things and places. Before we are allowed to enter airports and federal facilities each person is identified and checked for weapons. EN

If UNM MED SCHOOL is not doing this, I strongly suggest they start immediately: Give scholarships to students, in return for which they will agree to practice in New Mexico for a certain amount of years. That should help with our terrible paucity of doctors. RJ

Regarding “OPINION: The data has spoken: New Mexico’s path to solving our doctor shortage” (Jul. 27 Journal): Ms. Thomson’s recommendations to address NM DOCTOR SHORTAGE failed to mention the two big elephants in the room: exorbitant malpractice insurance rates and the tax doctors have to pay and cannot pass along. Not to mention having your children in an education system that ranks last in the US. JH

Wow. My heart is full after reading of the BACK TO SCHOOL RALLY with 6,000 teachers, administration, union reps, and city folks. This unity is what it takes to turn things around in education. It’s an important start! Well done. AH

Within the past month at BUS STOPS I have been exposed to drug use, feces, attempted theft of items on my person, countless buses that didn’t show up as scheduled, numerous incognizant people, and cars who think it is funny to throw stuff towards people waiting at bus stops. BV

You cannot make the future brighter by destroying the past. Taos is wrong in its decision to change history by removing KIT CARSON’S name from the park that bears it. We have scars from the lens of history which need to be available for the education of future generations. GH

Pirates of Penzance at the Albuquerque Little Theater is wonderful! The singers and music are first rate. Highly recommend! DSU
