SpeakUp!: As winter approaches, animals and bugs are looking for safe lodging
Raking leaves and disposing of them DESTROYS WINTER HABITATS for large numbers of beneficial creatures. The information being shared needs to be updated. Maybe talk to the “Be a Friend to Pollinators” writer? TP
Of all the issues that plague New Mexicans, DAYLIGHT SAVINGS ought to be the easiest to fix. If Arizona can go off DST, why can’t we? We watch with humor the bickering and fighting in Santa Fe every session, only to see opportunities to go off DST squashed like a bug. GH
A question for those who are so against Daylight Savings: does that mean no one should travel across the country or internationally because of “deadly” effects? There’s no choice but to accept consequent TIME CHANGE. Your arguments are weak. The human body has a great ability to adapt. DU
Chalk up one more bad list item for New Mexico. Absolutely astounding that our voters retained ALL JUDGES up for reappointment and maintained the Democrat stranglehold on N.M. We must have the lowest collective IQ of any state. DS
I cannot understand why people in this state continue to vote to be at the BOTTOM IN EDUCATION, crime, drug overdoses, child well-being. Keep voting for the same people, we will get the same results. It’s insanity. RM
Regarding “Alive and OK” (Nov. 11 Journal): Thanks for printing Ollie Reed Jr.’s poignant article on 105-year-old veteran VALDEMAR DEHERRERA’S incredible journey of survival from New Mexico to island of Baatan and finally to Manchuria as prisoner of war. His story is one of many who performed their duty to this country with honor. ht
The new LOBO LOUIE look reminds me of when Elaine drew on Uncle Leo’s eyebrows in an old “Seinfeld” episode. Other teams may not care for his demeanor, but it may grow on Lobo fans. GP
UNM’s new look for LOBO LOUIE puts him up to spec when compared to other mascots. If anything, the new suit maker is a major improvement. AJ
ABQ RIDE announced a 3-hour delay due to weather and afterwards they specifically posted online as being back in operation. Yet skipped the first running of the Montgomery bus after the delay. It seems they have a different definition of in operation than passengers counting on them for service. BV
The recent election confirms that the situation in N.M. is hopeless. Based on the reelection of incumbents and retention of judges, one would assume N.M. is a utopian wonderland. Clear-minded people know that is far from the truth. But the voters continue to double down on FAILED POLICIES and politicians. LG
One week after the election, Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver tells us that there are some PROVISIONAL BALLOTS still being tallied around the state. That just translates into no Republican victories are guaranteed until they are certified. Typical N.M. politics. DW
I haven’t heard anything about FAULTY ELECTION machines, votes not counted correctly, thousands of illegal migrants voting or anyone planning an insurrection in this election. Interesting. DW
I find it interesting that Los Angeles Times journalist LORRAINE ALI is placing blame for the Democratic Party election losses across the country on white women voters. If this is true, please explain to me how all the women in my Hispanic extended family voted for President-elect Donald Trump. It seems Ali did not learn anything. BT
As an INDEPENDENT VOTER, my concerns feel dismissed. If I question President Joe Biden’s cognition, border control, boys in girls sports or financial struggles I’m labeled racist, misogynistic or ignorant. When I question a candidate, I’m warned of fascism. Ironically, their responses pushed me to vote for him. JG
I hope President-elect Donald Trump fixes the Dreamers status once and for all. Trump offered a solution to the Democrats in his first term and Sen. Schumer turned it down. New Mexicans should have remembered this, in addition to all the other DEMOCRAT SHENANIGANS pulled on Trump. GT
Blue voters didn’t vote for candidates, they voted for a BIG BLUE MACHINE that chews up democracy and spits it out as socialism. Democrats will vote the party line over N.M. every time. Democrats want voters poor and dependent. Blue votes keep citizens under the thumb of Democrats’ anti-prosperity agenda. MM
By the time all the votes in blue states and cities are counted, it looks like President-elect Donald Trump’s popular vote margin over Vice President Kamala Harris will be around two percentage points. No landslide and no mandate. He received about the same NUMBER OF VOTES he did in 2020. JH
Somewhat predictably, President-elect Donald Trump’s initial administrative appointments have been somewhat scattershot, with a couple of real head-scratchers. No real experience required I guess. I’m thinking that a certain percentage of voters will be questioning their votes by the 2026 MIDTERMS. EJG
Hooray, the U.S. has been rescued from destructive DEMOCRATIC AGENDAS. The horrific Afghanistan withdrawal with 13 troops dead, other people left behind and brought out by private parties. Billions in war equipment left for our enemies, open borders with millions of illegal immigrants, drug cartels and criminals crossed, high inflation, horrible economy. Recovery now begins. DC
President-elect Donald Trump won the popular vote, electoral vote and a sweep of all of the seven battleground states. All of this in a resounding decisive DEFEAT OF DEMOCRATS and progressives. Cabinet picks will ensure America and Americans come first instead of millions of illegal immigrants flooding our country. Democrats are an existential threat to our democracy and national security. DV
President-elect Donald TRUMP’S APPOINTMENTS are furthering his agenda to sabotage our Constitution while shaking the Republican tree, seeing who breaks off and objects to his fiat. Republicans not kowtowing will be his next set of targets, of which he needs a constant supply to keep America angry and divided. JMR
Regarding “Waiting on waste: Albuquerque’s trash can dilemma” (Nov. 13 Sunday Journal): The BROKEN RECYLING BINS, most recycling can wait until the bin is full. Mine goes curbside about once a month, which extends the life of the bin fourfold. However, my waste driver often does a combo set-it-down-and-drag-it-while-driving-away maneuver throughout the neighborhood, with bins ending up sideways, leaving them abandoned and unsightly. JK
GARBAGE TRUCK drivers may be boosting the hydraulic pressure on the lifts so they will operate faster, which also increases the pressure on the arms that lift, and crushes, the bins and bursts hydraulic lines. Also breaking wheels when they are slammed down. Waste Management should absolutely prohibit this expensive practice. WL
While fleeing an incident on Central Avenue, APD CHIEF T-bones and seriously injures an innocent motorist. An APD officer accidentally shoots fellow officer in a response to a domestic violence. An APD officer wounds three innocent bystanders while involved in a shootout. Do I see a trend here? RF
How many garments hanging in Mayor TIM KELLER‘s closet display a logo reminding us that he is the mayor? When we drive ABQ streets, we can’t help but be reminded that he is our mayor. We don’t need to be treated to another photo-op, we need action, not hollow promises. MD
More treatment programs for DRUG ADDICTS are laudable. But first the addict must want to get clean. A program to get out of jail is not wanting to get clean. Incarcerate addicted criminals in jails devoted to chemical withdrawal. Then evaluate whether they deserve a program. Experience talking here. RL
Regarding “Retired lab chimps in NM headed to Louisiana sanctuary” (Nov. 9, Journal): Kudos to Gene Grant and all the others who finally got the OK to move the ALAMOGORDO CHIMPS to a beautiful sanctuary. May they have the peace they deserve in a lovely setting. They deserve it and hope we will get pics. Thanks a million Gene and everyone who helped. AB
