SpeakUp!: Crime and fear still ever present, our freshly elected officials must prioritize safety

Published Modified

Going to Nob Hill is scary. We parked near the Lobo Theater and searched for a restaurant in the vicinity. During the 7-minute walk to that restaurant, we were ACCOSTED BY THREE people who were rather threatening. In the future, I will frequent restaurants in my safe neighborhood.PW

Is camping now allowed IN THE FOOTHILLS? I’ve tried reaching out to Mayor Keller’s office but of course I only get a generic, computer-generated response. I fear for the homes and businesses in the foothills, especially when the weather gets colder. CH

I stopped at Walgreens at Harper and Wyoming and was in line to check out. Employees were nervous as a young man with a hoodie and a backpack walked into the liquor department and STARTED LOADING LIQUOR bottles into a cloth bag and walked out. Thank you, mayor. SE

The increasing demand for cash or private funding is making HOMEOWNERSHIP unattainable for many. This practice limits the pool of potential buyers, driving up prices and exacerbating the housing crisis. Consider more inclusive financing options to create a fairer market for all. GG

APS bussed 660 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS to a Lobo women’s basketball game on Nov. 4. Taxpayer funds are better spent on classroom learning. No wonder APS pupils perform so badly in basic reading and math. With Nov. 5 and 11 also off days, that’s three days’ vacation within one week. RJB

Regarding Sam Bregman’s “Children’s Code must be overhauled, updated to address alarming stats on juvenile crime” (Nov. 3 Sunday Journal), DA Bregman is 100% correct. Get with it, N.M. Legislature. Update the CHILDREN’S CODE exactly as Bregman is recommending and do it this session, no more excuses. SM

It’s good NEW MEXICO POLITICIANS have no power, influence or credibility nationally. Imagine if the US were to adopt N.M.’s policies and drive healthcare, education, income and children’s welfare to the bottom worldwide. America would be a global laughingstock. PE

POOP CLEAN-UP costs the city $295 for a half hour call, and $635 for a one-hour call. What? The employee that approved this rip-off should be fired for not spending our tax dollars wisely. The group of people that creates the mess should have to clean it up. AM

Lawmakers, please put an end to this senseless DAYLIGHT SAVINGS time change. No one likes it and it won’t cost a dime. SK

Let’s put an end to the hassles of setting our clocks backward and forward twice a year. Daylight Savings SAVES NO TIME and no daylight. It just causes confusion, missed appointments, sleep pattern disruption, memory lapses and depression every six months. Please go back to Standard Time forever. PP

Has everybody forgotten that we tried permanent DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME in 1973? It was a disaster. Why would it work this time? There’s actually a good reason we change our clocks: We follow the light. Duh. JH

Hard to believe that U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich and U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez were reelected given the failing conditions in N.M. Their reelection isn’t based on their accomplishments. N.M. HAD A CHANCE to change, improve and move forward. So sad. JMH

Voters in Bernalillo County agreed to retain all the district judges there including those who routinely RELEASE MURDERERS “on their own recognizance”. And they say crime doesn’t pay. JG

The majority of N.M. voters appear to get a severe case of amnesia when they step into the voting booth. They have forgotten what is NEEDED TO CHANGE the bad that is New Mexico. DN

President Donald Trump’s promise to CUT ENERGY COSTS by half is absurd. Oil is priced globally, natural gas primarily on long-term private contracts, electricity by individual state agencies. The president has nothing to do with these pricing elements. He must think everyone is gullible. RJ

If President Donald Trump gets to treat data the government releases on inflation, job reports, CPI reports, number of border contacts, arrests, deportations, etc. as he has his doctored-up financials then on paper we’re going have a GREAT LOOKING FUTURE, until his house of cards comes tumbling down on us. JMR

This concern is directed to our recently elected president and to those 30% or so citizens who predicted that the election would be TAMPERED WITH or sabotaged. Did he win because of that or was it just tic tac? I would never have voted for him because of his demeaner. JNV

Let’s get this straight; NO PRESIDENT has any control over inflation. That’s a product of economics. No president has control over gas prices. That’s a product of OPEC and greedy oil companies. Now stop blaming President Joe Biden. JL

Think grocery prices are high now? President Donald Trump is now elected and if he deports approximately 40% of the agricultural workforce, not only will prices be a lot higher, but grocery shelves will be empty, the meat packing industry depends on those UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS. JH

Republicans ought to be scrambling for ways to restrain their felonious PRESIDENT-ELECT from enacting the disastrous, cruel and once-illegal policies that he campaigned on. He surrounds himself with incompetents and criminals. No law-abiding person will work for him. I expect two years of chaos and turmoil, followed by impeachment. DM

Brexit showed the world UK citizens were shortsighted and could be persuaded to vote against their interests. They are far worse off now. The ELECTION OF DONALD TRUMP shows the same thing to a world that hoped we were better than that. I’m afraid for Ukraine and the checks and balances here. JC

The people of this Republic have spoken. Now, President Joe Biden, restore the US Border Sovereignty and CLOSE THE BORDER. The political PACs should now give their excess funds to hospitals, schools and soup kitchens to defray the costs supporting 10 million migrants. Begin the healing. GT

Elections over back to LAWYER ADS. Cannot understand why N.M. residents complain about everything then vote the same expecting different results. Definition of insanity? You must really love it here in the bottom of the barrel. BA

It’s horrible that the MENENDEZ BROTHERS were sexually assaulted by their father, but when they murdered their parents, they were 21 and 18 years old. They could have left. They didn’t need to kill their mother too and go on a huge spending spree. How many victims of abuse don’t choose murder? Why should they be free? JL

If you can’t FEED AND CLOTHE your child, why are you bringing them into this world? Seeing cars driving up for free kids’ lunch is expensive; that money could be used to feed your children. Gas isn’t free last time I checked. GL

When abortion is restricted, WOMEN DIE. By suicide, during pregnancy, during delivery, from illegal abortions, and at the hands of their partners. Anyone who thinks that the decision to carry a child belongs to anyone other than the potential mother should see a psychologist. Respect women and respect their lives. DM

We recently saw a man in a wheelchair that was stuck on a median. A gentleman got out of his vehicle, HELPED HIM off the median, then assisted him across the street. It almost restored my faith in humanity. It only takes a minute to be kind to others. HJ

I’ve always enjoyed the Journal’s “LIFE IN NEW MEXICO” section with its old photographs. Life seemed simple then with folks doing creative arts, hobbies and spending time at social and fraternal organizations when they had spare time; I’d also like to see more pieces done about home-grown music of that period. HH

Enjoy the ALBUQUERQUE CONCERT BAND performances at Eldorado High School Performing Arts Center most Sunday afternoons. They’re free, great music is played and the new conductor is excellent. www.abqband.org. SM

I’m just wondering, is ALBUQUERQUE part of the “Land of Enchantment”? I’m not feeling it. CH

Hey FASHIONISTAS — when did you go away? Men wear nice suits that will not button in front. The suit is dark with tan shoes and no socks. You gals just will not keep the hair out of your eyes. BB

If ELECTRIC VEHICLES are so wonderful then why do Democrats feel the need to force them on everyone? KP

SpeakUp! is the BEST FEATURE in the Albuquerque Journal. It allows conservative people like me to anonymously express an opinion without having our houses spray-painted. JRM

EXPLORE ACADEMY leadership after years still creates dangerous traffic patterns and backups on Osuna every single day. If the administrators there can’t figure out morning drop off, why would anyone trust them to educate your kid? MP

Why do drivers think it is not against the law for SPEEDING OR RECKLESS driving if you don’t get caught? Wake up people. MM
