TOP OF MIND: Do you believe local school districts in New Mexico should be allowed to continue four-day school weeks?

Top of Mind is a weekly question about an issue affecting New Mexicans.

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION

Why do you think Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham does not use an electric vehicle for official business?

For the same reason that she didn’t take a solar-powered sailboat to Dubai; it’s completely impractical. MLG is a career politico with higher political aspirations, but her mandates and emergency orders, while looking progressive on a national stage, are usually to the detriment of New Mexicans.

— Martin Villanueva

Albuquerque

The governor has been clear in her commitment to crack down on carbon emissions. She is also saddled with a budget that depends heavily on oil and gas. I am sorry for her being in that untenable position, but her choice of vehicle doesn’t influence mine: I love my EV.

— Paige Grant

Llano

Michelle Lujan Grisham belongs to the “good for thee but not for me” elite team. She wants us to buy the expensive, electric junk while she continues on with reliable gas. She shuts down the entire state during the pandemic and then allows herself out to shop for jewelry. Typical tyrant behavior.

— Stephanie Olguin

Corrales

She probably just hasn’t gotten around to it. I suggest a car made in the U.S., such as a Bolt by GM, a Lucid, made in Arizona, or a Tesla, because Tesla supplier Hota (Industrial) Mfg. Co. plans a $99M factory in NM.

— Jay Dratler Jr.

Santa Fe

As MLG seems to be our self-appointed queen, she considers herself to be exempt from all of her mandates. Said mandates are for only the rest of us New Mexican peons. If she insists on us peons using EVs she should be the first, as that’s what a true leader does.

— Bryan Adams

Bernalillo

Our governor doesn’t drive an EV because she needs a protective vehicle, probably with a certain amount of armor. If she spent tax dollars to retrofit an EV, conservatives would be highly critical, though it would be the right thing to do.

— Tom Ribe

Santa Fe

MLG correctly doesn’t use an EV for official business because it would be grossly dysfunctional for her use. The real problem is her shameless hypocrisy in demanding that everyone else should do as she says, not as she does.

— Stanley Lewis

Albuquerque

There are massive amounts of tax credits for electric appliances and vehicles from the Inflation Reduction Act. Rewiring America’s calculator identifies what benefits you are eligible for or will be in the near future. The average household will fully transition in 10 years. Let’s hope we can all get there, including the governor.

— Valari Taylor

Rio Rancho

EVs are not yet practical for many long trips in New Mexico. But the governor could gain good political karma if she would use a plug-in hybrid, which is the logical intermediate step between ICEs (internal combustion engine) and EVs.

— Alan Hall

Albuquerque

We are in a transition. Our governor and her protective force should have EVs in their fleet to use when (their) destination is nearby. EV sales need to benefit NM business.

— John Buchser
