TOP OF MIND: Do you think former President Donald Trump should be sent to prison for his 34 felony convictions in Manhattan?

Top of Mind is a weekly question about an issue affecting New Mexicans.

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION:

Do you think Donald Trump can win New Mexico in November?

“We need oil businesses back to help small businesses, schools and hospitals. Revenue from oil businesses do help with drug problems and mental issues. We need Trump back. He does help rurals.”

— Rhonda Sadler, Hobbs

“Trump has yet to win an election’s popular vote. He lost to Hillary by 2 million votes and lost to President Biden by 7 million votes. I think New Mexican voters are smarter than that.”

— Jim Lullie, Albuquerque

“Yes. Democrats have nothing to run on except abortion, abortion and more abortion. And their stance on other issues like immigration, economy and crime stink. Go Trump.”

— Stephanie Olguin, Corrales

“Anything’s possible, but the probability is extremely low. Most voting New Mexicans are too smart to vote for a candidate with multiple fatal flaws. At least, I hope so, because it’s the true blue freedom-loving thing to do.”

— Mark Yarnelle, Albuquerque

“No, New Mexico is a welfare, liberal state. These are attributes the Democrats go after. As long as New Mexico supports the progressive agenda, Donald Trump can’t win.”

— Dennis Martinez, Bernalillo

“Would like to see Trump win New Mexico but that will not happen. The majority of N.M. voters have tunnel vision when selecting candidates. All they look for is the big “D” when they choose. They don’t consider who is the best candidate. Flagrant examples: Lujan Grisham, Keller and Heinrich.”

— Dave Coulie, Albuquerque

“It could happen. Moderates who understand that the Biden administration has let immigration, inflation and foreign aid all go unchecked may likely vote Trump or Republican. Emotionally-driven Democrats will continue to vote “Democrat or die” because Trump still offends them personally. Comes down to a voter’s priorities in the end.”

— Adrienne Cox, Albuquerque

“No. The indicted and convicted former 45th president cannot win New Mexico in November’s election.”

— John Adams-Ingram, Albuquerque

“Normally, Trump’s chance would be ultra-slim. But this election is atypical. Biden’s record contains significant baggage: Inflation, crime, open borders/migrant issues. The uncertainty regarding how his physical condition and mental acuity will affect his ability to complete a second term cannot be ignored. President Harris? Slim chance, yes. Conceivable, definitely.”

— Ray Blanco, Rio Rancho

“When you compare the former president with Joe Biden, I’m optimistic about President Trump’s chances. The Democrats have given us inflation, a weak economy, open borders, increased crime, overt antisemitism, campus takeovers, fewer law enforcement personnel and a diminished world presence. We cannot even trust the justice system.”

— Pamela Cox, Los Ranchos

“Most New Mexicans are too patriotic and intelligent to support a failed former president who tried to overturn a free and fair election so as to unconstitutionally hold on to power. Insurrection and fake electors don’t play well here. As proof look to what happened to Couy Griffin.”

— Ron Schwartz, Albuquerque

“A vote for any Republican presidential nominee, not in this welfare/illegal alien/third-world state. New Mexico is a give me, give me state. The Republican agenda is for accountability, not welfare. When will New Mexicans wake up and come into the 20th century?

— Kenneth Turner, Bosque
