Top of Mind is a weekly question about an issue affecting New Mexicans.

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION

What were your takeaways from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s speech at the Democratic National Convention?

“No surprises with the governor’s discourse at the DNC in Chicago. As expected, she towed the party line and did everything possible to remain in the good graces of party leaders. Her close relationship with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is no secret. Her political future, nationally, is fully dependent on a Harris victory.”

— Dave Coulie, Albuquerque

“My takeaway from MLG’s speech; she cares more about the people in Washington, D.C. than the people of New Mexico. Didn’t Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris officiate MLG’s wedding in D.C.? I think she really wants to live and work in D.C., leaving our state behind.”

— Don Buford, Albuquerque

”The governor’s speech at the Democratic convention fell flat with the audience, with barely any acknowledgment of her points. Also, she didn’t blast Trump’s health care policies, she didn’t blast anything. A brief snarky statement was all we got. I was disappointed and rather embarrassed by it all.”

— Ron Faich, Albuquerque

”While Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham speech did not impress, the attention should be celebrated. New Mexico got a good focal point with MLG speaking, we as a state shouldn’t be forgotten. There is a lot of work to be done to bring us up from the bottom, and this should be motivation to do it.”

— Alexander Jones, Los Lunas

”It was flat with no substance, just like Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ speech. Three main issues plaguing Americans, including New Mexicans, high prices on everything, open borders and out-of-control crime. None were mentioned by Lujan Grisham and sparsely by any at the DNC.”

— Stephanie Olguin, Corrales

”Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris works on a list of speakers and up pops our governor. Credentials? None. She has taken N.M. to last place on nearly every list. She thinks spending millions on facilities and to get doctors from Texas is a winning income stream.”

— Dan Domme, Albuquerque

”I did not listen to Grisham’s speech because I’ve heard it many times before. Banishing and slandering political opponents seems to be the only policy the left has.”

— Gary Hayes, Bernalillo
