Top of Mind is a weekly question about an issue affecting New Mexicans.

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION:

Should U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland be sent to jail like Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon after also being found in contempt of Congress for not cooperating with a congressional investigation?

“Certainly. However, who is going to prosecute him? This is just a prime example of Democrats and Biden’s two-tiered system of justice. Former AG Holder did the same thing with no consequences. ‘No one is above the law.’ What a joke.”

— David Woodward, Albuquerque

“Jail time for contempt of Congress requires the DOJ to bring a case, but the DOJ found no crime — they did with Bannon and Navarro.”

— Greg Hassold, Albuquerque

“Of course Garland should be held accountable for contempt of Congress. No one should be above the law, right? Congress is an insider’s glee club where each member scratches another’s back. As long as the fox is guarding the hen house, these committee hearings are nothing more than photo ops.”

— Gary Hays, Bernalillo

“’Which one is not like the others?’ is the better question. Garland complied. Bannon and Navarro did not.”

— Eva Taylor, Albuquerque

“If, indeed, ‘fair is fair’ and ‘what’s good for the goose is good for the gander,’ then AG Garland should be found in contempt of Congress and spend a few nights in jail. However, don’t hold your breath waiting for it to happen. This DOJ will never jail the boss.”

— Dave Coulie, Albuquerque

“By all means Merrick Garland should be sent to prison as soon as Jim Jordan is sent to prison for ignoring a subpoena for refusing to testify before the house Jan 6th committee. And this guy is the chairman of the House Judiciary committee. He should be ashamed of himself.”

— Jim Lullie, Albuquerque

“No. The unedited transcripts of the interview are available, so there is nothing to be gained by releasing the recordings, and less to be gained by charging Garland with the contempt of truly contemptible congressional conspirators. The only reason to release the recordings is to allow evil technicians to manipulate the recordings, likely using artificial intelligence to convince credulous uneducated constituents to vote for evil candidates.”

— Dr. Frank Fisher, Rio Rancho

“Should? Maybe. Likely? Not. Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro went to jail but Eric Holder and Lois Lerner did not. I’d like an explanation.”

— Dominick Burlone, Rio Rancho

“Like the Democrats like to say, ‘no one is above the law,’ except when it comes to Democrat lawbreakers. E.g. quid pro quo, classified documents in unsecured areas, and withholding arms to counties that have been approved by Congress.”

— John Wolf, Albuquerque
