TOP OF MIND: Should schools spend more time with their students?
Top of Mind is a weekly question about an issue affecting New Mexicans.
LAST WEEK’S QUESTION
If Vice President Kamala Harris is the Democratic presidential nominee, who should she choose to run as her running mate? If Harris is not the Democratic candidate, whom should the Democratic Party nominate?
“The good news for Vice President Kamala Harris is the talent pool she has to choose from. She will choose a white male from a state that is either red or purple. Kentucky Gov. Andrew Beshear, North Carolina Gov. Ray Cooper, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelley, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are all smart and articulate; they would demolish J.D. Vance in a debate. Personally, I vote Sen. Mark Kelley.”
— Jeff Mitchell, Albuquerque
“Personally speaking, I believe Vice President Kamala Harris should choose Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly as her running mate. His professional experience combined with his bipartisan approach to most contentious issues make him a great pick for meeting the expectations of Republican voters. Realistically, the most likely pick for running mate is Gov. Andy Beshear from Kentucky.”
— Calahan Mitchell, Albuquerque
“Elizabeth Cheney would be an excellent choice as a running mate for Kamala Harris. Ms. Cheney would help boost doubt present amongst the white female population.”
— Anna Trujillo, Albuquerque
“No ifs, ands or buts about it, Kamala Harris will be the Democratic presidential nominee. No matter how loud and often the Republicans complain about “DEI hires” to insult her, it just makes her stronger. She’ll choose the best VP candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump. Probably Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro or Arizona Sen. Mark Kelley.”
— Mark Yarnelle, Albuquerque
“Sen. Mark Kelly from Arizona, in my opinion, would be a formidable vice president. I am supporting Kamala completely.”
— Walter Lang, Albuquerque
“The answers to both questions: Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro for Vice President Kamala’s VP and Gov. Josh Shapiro for Democratic presidential nominee.”
— Daniel Rodriguez, Santa Fe
“Vice President Kamala Harris will have little or no say in her VP choice. I believe the cabal that runs the Democratic Party who is allowing her to run will make that decision. The choice will be a white male, most likely a party faithful governor from a large swing state. Stay tuned.”
— Dave Coulie, Albuquerque
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION
Should the "180-day rule" dispute resolve in requiring schools to spend more time with their students? Regardless of district or local needs, should more than half of the school year be a five-day school week?
