Top of Mind: What, if anything, would persuade you to buy an electric vehicle?

TALK OF THE TOWN - 1

Top of Mind is a weekly question about an issue affecting New Mexicans.

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION

What do you think about the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling on affirmative action?

“Favoring a particular ethnic group in the name of ‘diversity’ is discrimination based on race. To its credit, the court has upheld the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment in disallowing this practice. Note to government: It’s time to stop checking the box marked ‘skin color.’”

Michael Keedy, Alamogordo

“Disgusted by the Supreme Court once again as they vote against affirmative action in college admissions. So many people of color will be bypassed and kept from success. Judge Clarence Thomas saying the Constitution is color blind shows his elitist bias as he is funded by big money.”

– Amber Espinosa-Trujillo, Santa Fe

“I have always done things with my own resume or transcripts and my own ethnic background and being female. But I suppose I do see the need in certain situations to slide around ‘the good old boys.’ Guess I’m 50/50 on this one.”

– Carol Simcik, Rio Rancho

“MLK once said ‘they will not be judged by the color of their skin.’ Affirmative action and (diversity, equity and inclusion) does exactly that. The government has practiced this ‘systemic racism’ for decades. It needs to stop, and I’m glad someone has moved to eliminate legalized racism.”

– Ron Smith, Albuquerque

“Isn’t it time for the Supreme Court to go back to using the Constitution rather than the Bible for their decisions?”

– Jeffrey Paul, Albuquerque

“Supreme Court’s recent ruling shows that after 59 years of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 things should have improved and now we all should be on an equal playing field; preferences due to groups or colors is not fair for every citizen on the playing field.”

– Harry Hart, Albuquerque

“There should not be a court-ordered restriction on affirmative action. Everyone has the right to higher education, but under a limited period to prove to be at par or leave.”

– Sam Roy, Albuquerque

“It’s about time! Now maybe — just maybe — the country can start progressing again.”

– Keith Kofford, Albuquerque

“The Supreme Court ruling can easily become a campaign slogan for Trump or DeSantis. Make America White again.”

– DeAnn Zwight, Albuquerque

“It was never a good idea to tell someone, ‘You are accepted, even if you haven’t met the requirements, because of your race.’ Christian Watson said it best in his (Sunday Journal) column of July 2, 2023: “What a person does is way more important than the color of that person’s skin.’”

– Paul Bates, Albuquerque

“It sucks. The SCOTUS has devolved into just another corrupt political institution. They’ve lost the confidence of many Americans. At least, in this case, the damage can be worked around. Right-wing extremists are having their day.”

– Mark Yarnelle, Albuquerque
