ABQ Academy sweeps, Belen's Salome makes history
FARMINGTON — Before Tuesday, there were only two: Edie Murdoch from Grants, and January Romero of Albuquerque Academy.
They were, until Rylee Salome of Belen came along, the only two girls with four individual New Mexico state golf championships.
Salome won her fourth on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles’ senior, who has signed to play for New Mexico State, captured the Class 4A title at Pinon Hills Golf Course, winning this year’s event by five shots.
She carded rounds of 73 on Monday and 1-under 71 on Tuesday, finishing at level par 144 for the two days as she joined Murdoch (1994-97) and Romero (1998-2001) in the ultra-rare four timers club.
“It was so meaningful,” she said. “I was so excited and happy.”
Hayden Dan, a freshman from Kirtland Central, finished at 149. Albuquerque metro champion, sophomore Addy Haas of Albuquerque Academy, was third, eight shots back of Salome.
“It was really exciting to get this,” Salome, 18, said. “It was a good way to finish my career. And I’m excited to play for New Mexico State next year. I can’t wait to get to Las Cruces.”
Albuquerque Academy’s girls and boys swept first place Tuesday in Farmington.
The girls won by 37 shots (673-710) over Kirtland Central, with Lovington (712) a close third. Academy has won five consecutive state championships in girls golf.
Academy’s boys, in going back-to-back in 4A, prevailed with an 11-shot victory over Artesia (623-634), with Lovington (641) third.
Deming senior Riley Apodaca won medalist honors. He went 72-73–145, and bested Lovington sophomore Ramon Orosco by two shots. Eighth-grader Thomas Whitten of Academy, who led the Chargers at metros a couple of weeks ago, again was low man for Academy, finishing in a three-way tie for third, six shots back of Apodaca.
“We played pretty solid, nothing exceptional,” Academy boys coach Kevan Schott said. “The boys wanted to play better, but we practiced really well throughout the week.”
Academy won eight of nine tournaments this season. The Chargers, as with the rest of the field, had to battle some winds that kicked up in the afternoon. (Salome, by contrast, was in the second group off in the early morning and avoided the worst of the conditions.)
“We thought we were gonna win it, and it came to fruition,” Schott said.
CLASS 1A-3A: At Riverview Golf Course in nearby Kirtland, Socorro’s girls won their 22nd state title (extending their own New Mexico record) and Mesilla Valley’s boys earned a fourth straight blue trophy.
Mesilla Valley shot 634 for the two days, 21 lower than runner-up Socorro, with New Mexico Military Institute third.
Senior Mason Hicks of NMMI was the individual champ (144), two shots better than Socorro sophomore Isaiah Silva.
The juggernaut Socorro girls shot 690 for the 36 holes. That was an incredible 116 shots in front of second place Gateway Christian. Robertson was third.
Freshman Abbegail Munguia of Socorro beat her teammate, junior Natasha Apodaca, in a three-hole aggregate playoff to earn first-place honors.
