Albuquerque Basketball Club wins national hoops tournament
The U17 Albuquerque Basketball Club Spotlight team won the Bigfoot Hoops Las Vegas Classic on Sunday, July 30, 2023.
The Albuquerque Basketball Club U17 Spotlight team, comprised of Albuquerque-area players entering their junior and senior years of high school, on Sunday afternoon won the Bigfoot Hoops Las Vegas Classic, and knocked off some high-level national competition in doing so.
ABC Spotlight won 76-72 in Sunday's title game against Big Red, a California-based team comprised of the players and coaches from prestigious Mater Dei High School, in Santa Ana, Calif.
The team was one of 18 ABC teams that competed in the national tournament this week in Las Vegas, Nevada, including the 16U girls ABC Spotlight team which took second place in their division.
The winning ABC Spotlight boys team is coached by Brandon Mason and J. Hill and is comprised of seven players who play for area high schools:
• Jalin Holland, Los Lunas High School
• Josh Jackson, Eldorado
• Latavious Morris, Atrisco Heritage
• Marquise Renfro, Atrisco Heritage
• Davon Smith, Volcano Vista
• Daniel Steverson, Cleveland
• Lukas Turner, Santa Fe High
Mason said the team got significant contributions at various times from all seven players, adding Holland averaged 23 points per game and Morris average 21.
