Boxing: Sanchez scores upset in Philly
For the second time in his career, Jason Sanchez has pulled a major upset.
The first one led to a contract with a major promoter.
Who knows where this one leads?
Friday night in Philadelphia, Albuquerque’s Sanchez defeated previously unbeaten Julian Gonzalez by split decision in an eight-round junior lightweight bout.
Sanchez is now 17-6 with nine knockouts. Gonzalez, of Reading, Pennsylvania, dropped to 16-1-1 with 12 KOs.
According to coverage from Boxingnewmexico.com, a fifth-round knockdown scored by Sanchez with a body shot produced the winning margin. The judges scores were listed as 77-75 for Gonzalez and 76-75 twice for Sanchez.
In 2018, Sanchez upset Top Rank, Inc., contract fighter Michel Rivera. That victory led to a Top Rank contract of his own and a world title shot.
Since the Rivera fight, Sanchez had lost six of nine bouts and was on a three-fight losing streak. He and Top Rank parted ways in 2021.
Now, after an impressive victory as “the opponent” on the road, Sanchez has at least reversed the trend.
The arrow, once again, is pointing up.
