Five questions with new Lobo Luke Haupt
Luke Haupt has committed to the UNM Lobos.
Luke Haupt, a 6-foot-6 guard from San Diego who played the past five seasons at Division II Point Loma Nazarene University, announced on Saturday he will use his final season of eligibility to play for the UNM Lobos.
The versatile guard averaged 13.2 points per game this past season while leading the Sea Lions in rebounds (5.9 per game), assists (3.3) and steals (1.5). He shot 37.9% from 3-point range.
Haupt was named to the All-Pac West First team and to the NABC’s First Team All West District team.
The Journal reached out to Haupt on Saturday with five questions trying to give Lobo fans a better understanding of the player who is on his way to New Mexico:
JOURNAL: What made playing for Eric Olen at UNM the right fit for you?
HAUPT: “Our relationship and us both coming in from San Diego. The commitment to success we all have in common.”

JOURNAL: Did you know much about UNM or the Pit before this process?
HAUPT: “I did not know much about the Pit. It seems like an incredible venue with passionate fans.”

JOURNAL: What type of player are Lobo fans going to see when you get on the court?
HAUPT: “They are getting someone that is a winner and will do what it takes to make sure that happens.”

JOURNAL: Some people will have doubts about a player coming from Division II being able to make an impact at a Division I program. What makes you confident you can make the jump and help the Lobos?
HAUPT: “I have played a large role on very talented teams and expect next year to be no different. I also think the game at a very high level and that does not go away when going up (in competition).”

JOURNAL: Your dad, who you played for in high school, has more than 630 coaching wins and a bunch of California Interscholastic Federation section titles. What’s part of your game that you got from playing for him?
HAUPT: “The biggest part of the game I got from my dad is my basketball IQ. ... (and) continued success reacting and learning how to attack different defenses.”
