After last playing in 1974, the Toros will play in the resurrected Continental Football League

East’s Andrew Henry (24), of New Mexico, runs the ball for a long gain as West’s Shamari Simmons, left, of Arizona State, and Shilo Sanders (21), of Colorado, pursue him during the Jan. 30 East-West Shrine Bowl in Arlington, Texas.

In a long dormant league, a Lobo fan favorite has found a new home.

Former New Mexico running back Andrew Henry has signed with the revived Continental Football League’s San Antonio Toros, the club announced last week via social media.

The Toros are one of five inaugural teams in the upstart CoFL, billed as a third-tier summer league under the NFL and UFL. Focusing on developing “athletes who have been overlooked,” per a league release, the CoFL is scheduled to re-debut in May after last playing in 1969.

A 5-foot-10, 195-pound Dallas native, Henry rushed for 350 yards and three touchdowns in 2023, his first season with the Lobos. He was later ruled ineligible midway through the 2024 season after it was found that his transfer tracer contained incorrect information

Henry protested the decision, claiming he was misled into believing he had another year of eligibility, but never appeared in another game for UNM. The Toros represent his first professional signing since he was ruled ineligible.

Henry did not respond to the Journal’s request for comment Wednesday.

After last playing in 1973, the Toros are set to return with a coaching staff featuring head coach Stan Bedwell and defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville, the former head coach of the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons.
