Here are the 2023 High School Football Stars of the Week

Each week of the high school football regular season, Journal staffer James Yodice highlighted the top 5 to 10 player performances and then fans could go online to ABQJournal.com and vote for which player was most deserving of the High School Star of the Week award.

Here are the 11 stars in 2023:

WEEK 1: LUCAS TRACY, ALBUQUERQUE ACADEMY: Tracy, a senior quarterback for the Chargers, was outstanding against Rio Grande, throwing four touchdown passes in a 50-0 victory.

WEEK 2: HERSHUL OLLOWAY, ST. PIUS X: Olloway, a freshman running for the Sartans, had a coming out party at Milne Stadium, rushing for 158 yards and three touchdowns as St. Pius beat Highland 28-2.

WEEK 3: DAMACIO KANESHIRO, LOS LUNAS: Kaneshiro, a senior quarterback for the Tigers, threw three touchdown passes, and also ran in a score, in a big 40-22 road victory at Farmington.

WEEK 4: NICOLAS CHAVEZ, SANTA ROSA: Chavez, a senior running back for the Lions, rushed for 199 yards in their 34-28 double-overtime win over Tularosa. He also scored three touchdowns, had 25 tackles and blocked a punt.

WEEK 5: ETHAN CONN, ARTESIA: Conn, a junior receiver for the Bulldogs, had a huge night against the Cleveland secondary, catching nine passes for 195 yards and a touchdown in their 36-34 victory.

WEEK 6: LORENZO URBAN, LEGACY ACADEMY: Urban, a sophomore quarterback for the Silverbacks, was instrumental in their huge 64-36 road win at Mesilla Valley, rushing for 147 yards while also throwing for 351 yards and six touchdowns.

WEEK 7: JOAQUIN TAFOYA, RIO GRANDE: Tafoya, a senior quarterback for the Ravens, accounted for five touchdowns — two rushing and three passing, to three receivers — in Rio Grande’s 54-8 triumph over Navajo Prep.

WEEK 8: JOSH NIETO, MANZANO: Nieto, a senior wide receiver for the Monarchs, was unstoppable against Valley in a losing cause, 62-42. He caught 13 passes for 244 yards and tallied four touchdowns, plus had a 2-point conversion reception

WEEK 9: ADRICK DELEON, ESPAÑOLA VALLEY: Deleon, a senior running back for the Sundevils, enjoyed a huge night against Taos. He rushed 22 times for 324 yards and scored five touchdowns in a crucial 38-25 triumph.

WEEK 10: JAMES VAUTIER, MANZANO: Vautier, a junior quarterback for the Monarchs, had a big night against Del Norte, throwing for six touchdown passes in a 63-8 victory.

WEEK 11: URIEL CASTRO, BERNALILLO: Castro, a junior quarterback for the Spartans, left it fly with great success at Albuquerque Academy. He tossed six touchdown passes in their 50-14 win.
