Here's how every UNM Lobos team did in the 2024-25 school year

The UNM Lobos have completed one of the most successful overall athletic years in program history, winning six Mountain West championships— more than any other conference school, easily winning the Learfield Directors Cup in the league and will be in contention for the best Group of Five program in the Learfield Directors Cup standings when those are finalized next week after the College World Series.

Here's a look at how UNM's athletics teams did, sport-by-sport, in league and postseason play.

Baseball

Overall record: 30-23

Mountain West record/place: 17-13 (3rd)

Mountain West tournament: 0-1 (lost in first round)

Other postseason: none

Of note: Jordy Oriach was first Lobo to earn All-America honors (3rd team, NCBWA) since 2017; team led nation in batting average (.337) and doubles per game (2.79), eighth in scoring (9.2).


Men's basketball

Overall record: 27-8

Mountain West record/place: 17-3 (1st, champion)

Mountain West tournament: 1-1 (lost in semifinals)

Other postseason: NCAA Tournament, 1-1 (beat Marquette, lost in second round to Michigan State)

Of note: First NCAA Tournament win since 2012; Donovan Dent named MW Player of the Year and All-America honorable mention; Richard Pitino named MW Coach of the Year; team led Mountain West in average home attendance (13,051), ranked 24th nationally and exceeded $4 million in ticket revenue; finished second in the country in free throw defense.


Women's basketball

Overall record: 18-14

Mountain West record/place: 11-7 (tied 4th)

Mountain West tournament: 0-1 (lost in quarterfinal to No. 4 San Diego State)

Other postseason: none

Of note: Viané Cumber named All-MW, set program record for career 3-pointers; team led Mountain West in average home attendance (4,843), ranked 26th nationally.


Men's cross country

Overall: Won two meets

Mountain West Championship (team): 1st, champion

Mountain West Championship (individual): Habtom Samuel, MW champion (back-to-back); team swept spots 1 through 5 (first program in MW history to do so).

NCAA Championship (team): 9th

NCAA Championship (individual): Samuel, second; three All-America runners (top 40 finish) in Samuel, Collins Kiprotich (35th) and Evans Kiplagat (40th).

Of note: Samuel's NCAA runner-up finish came despite losing one shoe halfway through the championship race; team's 272 points at NCAA Championship is program record, breaking 1966 record of 311 (the lower the point total the better); matched program record for highest national ranking at No. 5 entering championship meet; Darren Gausen named MW Coach of the Year.


Women's cross country

Overall: Won three meets

Mountain West Championship (team): 1st, champion

Mountain West Championship (individual): Pamela Kosgei, MW champion; team took 5 of top 11 spots

NCAA Championship (team): 7th

NCAA Championship (individual): Kosgei, second; two All-America runners (top 40 finish) in Kosgei and Mercy Kirarei (35th).

Of note: Have finished in top 10 at NCAA Championship 14 times; program has had at least one All-America runner in 13 consecutive seasons.


Football

Overall record: 5-7

Mountain West record/place: 3-4 (tied for 5th)

Bowl game: none

Of note: QB Devon Dampier's first All-Mountain West first-team QB; LG Baraka Beckett also named first-team All-MW; first time Lobos have had two first-team players since 2014.


Men's golf

Overall: No wins, seven top 5 finishes

Mountain West Championship: 3rd (team); top individual, Mesa Falleur, tied 4th

NCAA Regional: 3rd (team); top individual, Carson Herron, tied 11th

NCAA Championship: tied 23rd (team)

Of note: Falleur and Carson Herron named All-MW; Falleur and Alvaro Portillo tied for low round on season (65); one of four men's teams to participate in the first NB3 Matchplay at Twin Warriors event, going 1-1-1 in a field with Texas, Stanford and New Mexico State.


Women's golf

Overall: No wins, no top 5 finishes

Mountain West Championship: 7th (team); top individual, Maria Garcia, 17th

Postseason: none

Of note: Garcia named MW Freshman of the Year and second team All-MW; Garcia had low round of season (67); one of four women's teams to participate in the first NB3 Matchplay at Twin Warriors event, going 1-2-0 in a field with Texas, Stanford and New Mexico State.


Women's soccer

Overall record: 7-6-5

Mountain West record/place: 3-5-3 (ninth)

Mountain West tournament: none

Other postseason: none

Of note: Forward Presley Devey named second team All-MW; defender Ashley Moody named to MW All-Newcomer team.


Softball

Overall record: 20-30-1

Mountain West record/place: 6-16 (tied 8th)

Mountain West tournament: none

Other postseason: none

Of note: IF Ashley Archuleta named first team All-MW; RHP McKenna Guest named second team All-MW.


Swimming and diving

Mountain West Championship (team): 9th

Mountain West Championship (individual): Isabella Gomez, 3rd, platform diving

Of note: Gomez named All-MW in 1-meter, 3-meter and platform diving, the first Lobo to earn all-MW in all three diving events since 2013.


Men's tennis

Overall record: 16-7

Mountain West record/place: 4-2 (tied 2nd)

Mountain West tournament: 1st, champion

NCAA Tournament: lost first round to No. 5 Stanford

Of note: Arda Azkara named MW Player of the Year; Azkara and Aram Noroozian named All-MW singles; Azkara and Alexander Maggs named All-MW doubles; Avery Tallakson named MVP of MW tournament.


Women's tennis

Overall record: 8-16

Mountain West record/place: 2-8 (tied, 9th)

Mountain West tournament: lost in first round to No. 7 Air Force.

Other postseason: none

Of note: Maude Vandeputte named All-MW singles.


Men's indoor track and field

Mountain West Championship (team): 2nd

Men's outdoor track and field

Mountain West Championship (individual champions): Cam Watts, 100m; Collins Kiprotich, 1,500m; Mathew Kosgei, 3,000m steeplechase; Ishmael Kipkurui, 5,000m; Vincent Chirchir, 10,000m; Levente Soos, 400m hurdles.

NCAA Championship (individual top 8): Kipkurui, 1st, 5,000m, 7th, 10,000; Samuel, 2nd, 5,000m, 2nd, 10,000m; Kosgei, 6th, 3,000m steeplechase.

Of note: First Top 5 national finish since 1967.


Women's outdoor track and field

Mountain West Championship (team): 1st, champion

Mountain West Championship (individual): Judy Rono, 800m; Pamela Kosgei, 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m; Jasmine Wood, 10,000m.

NCAA Championship (team): 9th

NCAA Championship (individual top 8/scoring): Kosgei, 1st, 10,000m, 1st 5,000m; Marion Jepngetich, 4th, 5,000m.

Of note: UNM's women's 4x400m relay team qualified for the NCAA Championship for the first time in school history (Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer, Rebecca Grieve, Hanna Kiess, Sofia Pineda); those four plus Kosgei, Rono (1,500m), Sophia McDonnell (3,000m steeplechase) and Marion Jepngetich (5,000m) gave UNM eight women qualifiers in the NCAA Championship; Darren Gauson named MW Coach of the Year.


Volleyball

Overall record: 13-15

Mountain West record/place: 6-12 (9th)

Mountain West tournament: none

Other postseason: none

Of note: Outside hitter Lauryn Payne named All-MW.
