Hockey: Ice Wolves look to continue hot streak

The NM Ice Wolves return to the ice this weekend to continue its hot season start.

The New Mexico Ice Wolves hosts the Corpus Christi IceRays at 6:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Outpost Ice Arenas.

These three games mark the beginning of a five-game series between the two teams; the Ice Wolves head to Corpus Christi, Texas, next weekend for the final two games.

This weekend is the second week of the organization’s food drive benefiting veteran group Warriors Serving Warriors. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations to the ice rink, all donations will be given to local veterans in need.

LAST WEEK: The Ice Wolves took a quick trip to El Paso for two games against the Rhinos. Taking a 2-1 loss Friday night, the Ice Wolves came back strong with a 5-2 win on Saturday, seeing highlight-reel goals from veteran players Andy Earl and Nayan Pai. Earl’s baseball-style goal earned him the NAHL’s No. 3 Play of the Week.

RECORDS AND STANDINGS: Nearing the halfway point of the season, with 19 games played, the Ice Wolves hold onto the second-place spot in the South Division, boasting an 11-6-1-1 record. Nestled in eighth place at the bottom of the division are the IceRays with a 6-10-1-0 record. This will be the first matchup of the season between New Mexico and Corpus.

PLAYERS TO KNOW: Pai recently earned the South Division second star of the week. This past weekend in El Paso, he tallied four points with an assist Friday night and two goals and an assist in Saturday’s game. He is third on the team in points with 14 and has played in all 19 games.
