Hoops notebook: Lobo men, women release nonconference schedules, NMSU offers local players
UNM fans dressed in red and white for a Jan. 11 game against San Diego State in the Pit. UNM Athletics marketed the game as a “stripe-out,” encouraging fans in alternating sections to wear either red or white.
New Mexico men’s basketball on Monday made official the date and opponent of its 11th and final non-Mountain West opponent, completing a home-heavy nonconference slate of games.
Division II New Mexico Highlands will visit the Pit on Dec. 1, the UNM Lobos announced.
However, four of the team’s toughest nonconference games will likely be away from the friendly confines of the Pit, including an in-state rivalry game in Las Cruces against New Mexico State on Nov. 14. There are two neutral court games in Kansas City, Missouri, against Nebraska of the Big Ten and then either the Big 12’s Kansas State or the SEC’s Mississippi State on Nov. 20 and 21. And then another true road game at VCU in Richmond, Virginia, on Dec. 10.
Game times and TV assignments for the games have not yet been set, nor has a date been set for the release of the 20-game Mountain West schedule, featuring 10 home and 10 road games.

NMSU offers two from ABQ
Two Albuquerque high school basketball players picked up scholarship offers this past week from New Mexico State University: Evan Nañez, a sophomore point guard and star wide receiver at Cleveland High School who plays travel basketball with ABC Prep, and guard Caden Miller, an Albuquerque native who is a sophomore at ABC Prep and now holds 10 Division I offers.
ABC Prep junior guard Brandon Mason Jr. also received an NMSU offer, as well as one from UNM, among several others.
Speaking of ABC Prep
Tamaiah Gary, a freshman post for ABC Prep and the daughter of former UNM Lobo great Dairese Gary, has already received Division I offers from UNM, Missouri, Wisconsin, UNLV, Arizona State and San Diego State.
Not a bad summer
Former Lobo Josiah Allick had himself quite the summer.
The 6-foot-8 forward who finished his college career at Nebraska after playing for the Lobos in the 2022-23 season, earned league MVP honors on July 10 in the New Zealand NBL playing for the Southland Sharks, got married on Aug. 11 to a former volleyball player from the University of Kansas City (Allick played there before transferring to UNM), and earned his master’s degree from Nebraska on Aug. 16.
