UPDATE: Sources: Mendenhall expected to become Utah State head coach

The news was first reported by Jeff Siembieda on 610 AM/95.9 FM's morning show "The Opening Drive.” The 58-year-old former BYU and Virginia head coach has been linked to the Utah State vacancy by multiple reports over the last week, but said Tuesday he had not been approached.

“I have only been speculated to have been contacted by (Utah State),” Mendenhall said in a press conference.

Mendenhall was hired one year ago after a two-year hiatus from coaching, later signing a five-year, $6 million contract. He completed his UNM debut season last Saturday, a 5-7 campaign that saw the program finish with its most wins since 2016.

If Mendenhall were to leave for another position, UNM would be compensated $2 million. Per his contract, that sum can be paid out over the next three years in monthly installments.

Utah State completed a 4-8 season last Friday under interim head coach Nate Dreiling. Dreiling was elevated after former head coach Blake Anderson was fired in July due to alleged noncompliance with university policy in reporting sexual misconduct.

On3.com’s Pete Nakos initially linked Mendenhall to the Utah State job on Nov. 25, reporting he was “working to get his name in the mix.” FootballScoop.com published a similar report this week, writing that Mendenhall had emerged as a “central figure” in Utah State’s search.
