Senior forward Alejandra Puerto scored her third goal of the season in the 68th minute at Papé Field and the emerging UNM Lobo defense held on for a 1-0 win over the Big Ten's Oregon Ducks on Thursday night in Eugene, Oregon.

The win is career coaching victory No. 100 for Albuquerque native Heather Dyche and the Lobos' second over the Ducks in just over a year (UNM beat Oregon 3-1 on Aug. 25, 2024, in Albuquerque).

UNM remains undefeated on the season at 2-0-2 and plays at Oregon State on Sunday. Oregon falls to 2-2-1 on the season.

Neither matchup was one Dyche said earlier this week she expected to be easy for her team.

"Anytime you play a Power 4 team, you're dealing with really good athletes, really nice facilities and a high level of soccer, which is what we want," Dyche said on Tuesday. "We want to play the best and see where we are and continue to grow."

Puerto's 68th minute goal came off the first career assist from Albuquerque's own Savanah Sanchez, a freshman forward from Hope Christian, and defender Fiona Jenkins, a junior from Fort Collins. Keeper Jasmin Gonzalez-Rutt of Santa Fe, collected the clean sheet and had two saves.

Oregon had 13 shots and five corners. UNM had 12 shots, six on goal and one corner.

Dyche, an Eldorado High graduate who played collegiately for nationally-ranked teams at both Nebraska and Florida State, notched her first coaching win for the Lobos on Aug. 26, 2015, against New Mexico State. Win number 50 came Oct. 4, 2019, vs. Nevada.

Sunday's game at Oregon State is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed online on the Mountain West Network. The Beavers are 0-1-2 and coming off a 1-1 home draw Thursday night vs. Idaho State.

Dyche joined us on the What's Up in 5:05 podcast before the season to talk about this year's Lobos:

In Episode 4, Geoff catches up with UNM Women's soccer coach Heather Dyche on the eve of the 2025 season. What's the difference between preseason tired and midseason tired? How did her team get two first place votes in the preseason poll and still get picked just seventh? Who should we watch for? And what is her go-to, non-soccer activity to reset or recharge? What's up in 505 is a podcast aimed at getting Albuquerque sports stories in a format somewhere between an article and a long-form interview. The 5:05 time limit -- a target Geoff Grammer is really bad at hitting -- is a tip of the cap to the 505 area code that has belonged to New Mexico forever, and more specifically to central New Mexico in more recent years.
