New Mexico receives votes in AP Top 25 for first time in nearly 28 years
UNM players run onto the field before the start of Friday’s game against San Diego State at University Stadium.
After missing out on a Mountain West Championship berth, the Lobos got a rare consolation prize.
New Mexico received nine votes in this week’s college football AP Top 25, the first set for the program in nearly 28 years.
UNM last received AP Top 25 points (6) in the final poll of the 1997 season. Sunday’s poll represents the most points for the program since receiving 52 in a Dec. 8, 1997 poll, the last time the Lobos won nine regular-season games.
UNM is one of 21 current FBS programs that has never been ranked in the AP Top 25.
In Sunday’s poll, the Lobos received a high ranking of 22nd from WTOP.com’s Dave Preston. Three voters ranked them 23rd and three ranked them 25th, while two others voted them 24th for a total of 20 points, the fifth-most of any unranked team this week.
Journal staff writer Sean Reider is an AP Top 25 voter, and did not vote for the Lobos.
UNM was one of three Mountain West programs to receive votes in the AP Top 25 this week. UNLV received a league-best 14 votes (33 points) while San Diego State received one vote and one point each.
The Lobos also received two points in the US LBM Coaches Poll, voted on by 62 FBS head coaches. UNM head coach Jason Eck is listed as one of the poll’s voters.
