Former Rio Rancho High cross country/track runner Charlie Vause was invited to attend last month’s ESPYs ceremony in Los Angeles, as the Gatorade National Athlete of the Year for cross country.

“It was an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime trip,” Vause said. The event was held at the Dolby Theater, site of the Academy Awards ceremony.

All the national Gatorade recipients got to be on stage and have their names announced.

“I’ll never forget it,” Vause said.

This week he is leaving for southern Chile, where he is planning to do a two-year mission. He’ll start competing collegiately for BYU in the fall of 2027.
