NFL Forecast: Could weather affect this week's games?

Published Modified

When studying matchups for Week 2, be sure to check the weather forecasts. As of Wednesday, there were three games at outdoor venues (Miami, Meadowlands, Kansas City) listed on NFLWeather.com in which rain could occur.

Here’s a look at all 16 games:

Thursday

Washington Commanders (1-0) at Green Bay Packers (1-0), 6:15 p.m.

Packers -3.5 (48.5 O/U)

Green Bay had one of the most impressive victories of Week 1, beating Detroit 27-13 and showcasing DE Micah Parsons. He played only about half the snaps but his presence allowed the Packers to torment Lions QB Jared Goff, who was sacked four times. Washington, meanwhile, showed it can play defense by flustering New York Giants QB Russell Wilson in a 21-6 victory. Forecast: Packers 28, Commanders 16

Sunday

NY Giants (0-1) at Dallas Cowboys (0-1), 11 a.m.

Cowboys -6 (44.5 O/U)

The Cowboys have owned this rivalry since 2017, going 15-1.As for last week, Dallas came close to upsetting the host Eagles but lost 24-20 as an 8-point underdog. Sure, WR CeeDee Lamb had a team-high 110 yards, but key drops on the Cowboys’ last drive doomed their chances.

Forecast: Cowboys 24, Giants 14.

Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens, 11 a.m.

Ravens -11.5 (45.5 O/U)

Forecast: Ravens 31, Browns 17. This spread is the highest of the season. But to use the “On any given Sunday” cliche, in Week 8 last year the Browns prevailed 29-24 as a 7.5-point dog. That was a surprise considering Baltimore was the league’s highest-scoring team in 2024. Cleveland had the lowest-scoring squad.

New England Patriots (0-1) at Miami Dolphins (0-1), 11 a.m.

Dolphins -1 (44.5 O/U)

Forecast: Dolphins 26, Patriots 17. Miami QB Tua Tagovailoa might be happy to be facing the Patriots this week, for he had his best game of 2024 against them (four TD throws). However, he’s coming off a 33-8 loss at Indianapolis in which he had his worst game since 2021.

Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) at Cincinnati Bengals (1-0), 11 a.m.

Bengals -3 (48,5 O/U)

Forecast: Cincinnati beat host Cleveland last week 17-16 despite only 141 yards of offense, the worst total for a winning team the past five seasons.

LA Rams (1-0) at Tennessee Titans (0-1), 11 a.m.

Rams -5.5 (41.5 O/U)

Forecast: Rams 16, Titans 13. Tennessee didn’t score a TD last week in Denver despite having five short fields. On one possession, the Titans took over at Denver’s 24 and (gasp!) wound up punting.

Buffalo Bills (1-0) at NY Jets (0-1), 11 a.m.

Bills -6.5 (46.5 O/U)

Forecast: Bills 30, Jets 17. Both teams could have a slight letdown, with Buffalo coming off its colossal comeback against Baltimore and NYJ off its revenge-game loss against Pittsburgh QB Aaron Rodgers.

Chicago Bears (0-1) at Detroit Lions (0-1), 11 a.m.

Lions -6 (46.5 O/U)

Forecast: Lions 28, Bears 20. Detroit will face the first of five foes this season coming off a MNF game.

Seattle Seahawks (0-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0), 11 a.m.

Steelers -3 (40.5 O/U)

Forecast: Now it’s Steelers WR DK Metcalf top get revenge vs. former team.

San Francisco 49ers (0-1) at New Orleans Saints (0-1), 11 a.m.

49ers -3 (42.5 O/U)

Forecast: 49ers 21, Saints 20. Uh-oh! TE George Kittle went on IR (hamstring) and QB Brock Purdy has toe/shoulder issues. He reportedly could miss weeks.

Denver Broncos (1-0) at Indianapolis Colts (1-0), 2:05 p.m.

Broncos -1 (42.5 O/U)

Forecast: Denver walloped visiting Indianapolis last year 31-13 but won’t again get to face 2024’s worst-rated QB (Anthony Richardson). Daniel Jones will get his second straight start.Last week, the Broncos held Tennessee to 133 yards. It’s just too bad Denver didn’t cover the 9-point spread. Grrr.

Carolina Panthers (0-1) at Arizona Cardinals (0-1), 2:05 p.m.

Cardinals -6.5 (44.5 O/U)

Forecast: Cardinals 24, Panthers 20.

Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) at Kansas City Chiefs (0-1), 2:25 p.m.

Pick-em (46.5 O/U)

Forecast: Defending champion Philadelphia and KC will meet in this Super rematch. At midweek the Eagles caught a break when they learned DT Jalen Carter won’t be suspended for this game after spitting on Dallas’ Dak Prescott last week. Meanwhile, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said KC lacked intensity in its opening 27-21 loss to the LA Chargers. That’s enough reason to think the Chiefs will be firing on most cylinders here.

Forecast: Chiefs 27, Eagles 24

Atlanta Falcons (0-1) at Minnesota Vikings (1-0), 6:20 p.m.

Vikings -3.5 (44.5 O/U)

Forecast: Vikings 28, Falcons 16.

Monday

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0) at Houston Texans (0-1), 5 p.m.

Texans -2.5 (42.5 O/U)

Forecast: Texans 23, Buccaneers 17

LA Chargers (1-0) at Las Vegas Raiders (1-0), 8 p.m.

Chargers -3.5 (45.5 O/U)

Forecast: Chargers 31, Raiders 21.

Last week’s forecast record: 6-10 ATS, 7-9 straight up Here are some additional fun and not-so-fun tidbits

BET STILL ALIVE: Fans who wagered on Baltimore going winless this season still have a live ticket. The Westgate SportsBook in Las Vegas posted preseason odds of 1,000-1 that the Ravens would not be victorious in a game this year. Buffalo also was listed at 1,000-1, but fans can rip up those ducats after the Bills’ stunning comeback triumph against the Ravens on Sunday night.

RUNNING TO VICTORY: Indianapolis had a week-high 40 rushes for 156 yards in beating Miami on Sunday 33-8, the most lopsided victory for any team in Week 1. That number of carries was a recipe for success last season, with run-heavy squads having 40 or more rushes going 28-2. But one of the defeats occurred when Miami lost at Indianapolis 16-10 despite its 40-carry, 188-yard afternoon.

TITLE HOPES AT STAKE THIS WEEK: The New Orleans Saints and N.Y. Jets, both losers in Week 1, are set to play their second straight home game Sunday. Since NFL title games were first played in 1933, no team ever won a league crown after losing at home twice to open the season. Thus, there’s extra pressure for the Saints and Jets to avoid rolling out their championship coffins.

RECOVERING FROM LATE-GAME COLLAPSE: Last season there were five games in which a team squandered a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and were defeated, as was with Baltimore and Chicago last week. In each case, the losing team won its game the next week and also went 5-0 ATS. By contrast, teams last year that had those big come-from-behind wins were a cumulative 2-3 SU and 1-3-1 ATS their next outing.

COOLING OFF IN THE HEAT: It used to be Miami was virtually invincible playing in South Florida early in the regular season. From 1994 through the 2002 season Miami was 18-0 when playing at home in the steamy months of August and September (there was an August game in 1997). They also were 13-4-1 against the spread. And all the credit can’t go to Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino, who retired after the 1999 season. But since 2003 Miami is 14-21 at home before October kicks in with a mark of 11-23-1 against the spread.
