Prep football: Week 3 games to watch and expert picks
Games to watch
1. Rio Rancho at Las Cruces, Field of Dreams, 7 p.m. Thursday: Volcano Vista shot its shot against the Bulldawgs in Week 2, and fared well for a while before Las Cruces pulled away. Now the Rams roll into town, coming off two victories to open the season. Can Rio Rancho’s defense find a way to slow Cruces’ stellar RB, Danny Amaro?
2. Centennial at Artesia, 7 p.m. Friday: A super attractive matchup between two of the state’s best teams. The Hawks definitely have some weapons to deal with, but of course so do the Bulldogs, and this is one of those games where it might take 50 points to win.
3. Eldorado at Cibola, Nusenda Community Stadium, 7 p.m. Friday: The Eagles have had two weeks to prepare for the Cougars, who have momentum after a 36-point second half the other night against Sandia. Great battle of wits here between veteran head coaches Charlie Dotson and David Howes; the latter has to figure out a way to scheme against an explosive, and balanced, Eldorado offense.
4. Santa Rosa at Robertson, 7 p.m. Friday: Another solid matchup between excellent teams in different classes, with the Lions, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A after their opening win over Texico, playing the Cardinals, who are rated No. 3 in Class 3A.
5. Roswell at Hobbs, 7 p.m. Friday: The Coyotes face their third consecutive Class 6A opponent, coming off wins over Los Lunas and Alamogordo. The Eagles are gonna need to match Roswell’s physicality in this one, and this is a game that should give us some insight as to the Eagles’ viability as a playoff challenger.
