Prep football: Week 4 games to watch and expert picks
Games to watch
1 Las Cruces at Cleveland, 7 p.m. Friday: Not just No. 1 (Storm) vs. No. 2 (Bulldawgs) by the Class 6A coaches poll, but one of those rare regular-season games that has the potential to draw in a lot of casual fans on Friday night in Rio Rancho. (See my column in Sunday's Journal for more on this matchup.)
2. Centennial at Rio Rancho, 7 p.m. Friday: Rio Rancho indeed is the center of the state’s prep football universe on Friday night, with this game, a super attractive matchup, playing across town and opposite Cruces-Cleveland.
3. Eldorado at Los Lunas, 6 p.m. Friday: It’s a District 2-6A opener for both teams, and a hugely important game as both of these outfits hope to be at least inside the top eight by the time the playoff brackets are revealed.
4. Albuquerque Academy at St. Michael’s, 1 p.m. Saturday: The Horsemen have the state’s longest current winning streak, and this talented Academy team is certainly plenty talented enough to put an end to that streak. Could be a special game.
5. Lovington at Roswell, 7 p.m. Friday: The only setback the Coyotes suffered a year ago in their championship season was a loss to the Wildcats, and this is their first meeting since that game. As with the other teams in 2-5A (Mayfield-Gadsden and Artesia-Deming also on the slate), this is a district opener.
