Leslie Nayarez of Atrisco Heritage is New Mexico’s recipient of the Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award, which goes to the country’s most outstanding high school senior female wrestlers.

The award also encompasses scholastic achievement, citizenship and community service. Saunders is a four-time world wrestling champion and Hall of Famer.

Nayarez went 38-2 last season and won the 114-pound title at the state tournament in February.

The Saunders is the girls’ equivalent of the Dave Schultz award given to the boys; Mason Posa of La Cueva was this year’s selection in New Mexico.

METRO TRACK: The last of the metro events arrives starting Thursday, with Nusenda Community Stadium hosting the Albuquerque Metro Track and Field Championships on Thursday and Friday.

The field events are split between the two days, with action starting at 4:15 p.m. each day.

The running program begins at 5:15 p.m. Thursday and 5:30 on Friday.

Bernalillo, Hope Christian, St. Pius and Academy (girls only) join the city’s 13 public high schools, plus Cleveland and Rio Rancho, in the metro field.

AHS SIGNEES: Albuquerque High held a large signing ceremony earlier this week for some of its athletes. Here is a rundown of the signees that the Journal has not previously reported:

Two Bulldog girls soccer players signed: JaNae Romero with New Mexico Highlands and Elsie Miller with Regis University in Denver.

Three AHS wrestlers signed: Vanessa Ramos and Michael Jaramillo with Arizona Christian and Jayden Morfin with Trinidad (Colorado) State.

Ruby Romero signed to run cross country and track at Fort Lewis College in Durango. McCarley Trigg signed to play tennis at Santa Barbara City College.

The school also honored two athletes receiving NMAA scholarships. Football player Isaac Houlihan earned the Phil Schroer Memorial Scholarship, and Dominic Quintana was awarded the Mike Danoff Memorial Scholarship.

THIS AND THAT: Former Cleveland High standout Daniel Steverson went on social media to announce he had committed to play men’s basketball at Fort Lewis College. … Deming’s Ezra Hensley, one of the state’s top big men in football, reversed his college choice earlier this month. He decommitted from Colorado State-Pueblo and announced that he will instead play for New Mexico State.
