Prep notes: Mabrey Memorial Scholarship to identify first recipient; Massey named state's top volleyball player
The Buster Mabrey Memorial Scholarship will soon be identifying its first recipient.
The scholarship, named for Mabrey, the former executive director of the New Mexico High School Coaches Association who died on Dec. 30, is to be awarded annually to the son or daughter of an active member of the NMHSCA, said Lori Mabrey, Mabrey’s widow.
Scholarship money may be awarded to multiple students. It wasn’t immediately known yet if the student had to be an athlete.
Last month, the organization staged its first Birdies for Buster golf tournament, one of the fundraising endeavors for the scholarship fund.
“It’s definitely a start,” Mabrey said. “We want to build on it. It’ll take a lot of legwork to keep it going.”
Mabrey even floated this:
“If every single coach in the organization donated just $100, we would have enough money to change a bunch of lives,” she said. “And I think that would make Buster extremely happy.”
Mabrey said the inaugural golf tournament was sold out with 40 teams, and that next year it could expand with a second flight. A silent auction raised another $1,000, she added.
“I’m just super excited about the possibilities of growing this thing and helping somebody else’s child get their education paid for,” Mabrey said.
Figuring out further criteria for the scholarship recipient(s) is still being formulated.
MASSEY: Las Cruces High is the two-time defending Class 5A state volleyball champion, and a huge reason why is the prowess of 6-foot-1 senior outside hitter Addison Massey.
MaxPreps has named Massey, a Kansas State commit, New Mexico’s top player headed into the 2025 season.
Last fall, Massey had 516 kills, and another 236 digs.
THIS AND THAT: Former La Cueva High and current University of Wisconsin linebacker Mason Posa has been ranked 17th on a list of freshmen to watch in the Big Ten, according to @jrs_rankings on X. … Former Las Cruces High standout guard William “Deuce” Benjamin, who has played basketball for New Mexico State and New Mexico Junior College, is now at Division II Minot State in North Dakota, the Las Cruces Sun-News reports.
