Week 8 prep football games to watch
1. Eunice at Texico, 7 p.m. Friday: Mega Class 2A matchup on the eastern plains, as this is not just a pairing of the two teams that met last year for the state championship, but these are the teams ranked No. 1 (Texico) and No. 2 (Eunice) in the latest coaches’ poll.
2. St. Pius at Portales, 7 p.m. Friday: With the Sartans off to a quick start in league play, this becomes nearly an urgent game for the Rams if they want to win a district title, and the winner of this district is going to have a shot at a first-round bye.
3. Robertson at West Las Vegas, 6 p.m. Friday: Yes, this is a game that probably is more fun for everyone concerned when it’s the season finale, but that doesn’t lessen this matchuip’s importance, as the district rivals meet with much on the line. As usual. This is one of two 3A games in Week 8 pairing games against teams ranked in the top six; the other is Dexter at Socorro.
4. Farmington at Volcano Vista, Thursday, 7 p.m., Nusenda Community Stadium: The Scorpions knocked the Hawks out of the playoffs a year ago on this same field; now the two are district rivals, so the stakes remain high in their own way.
5. Hobbs at Centennial, 7 p.m. Friday, Field of Dreams: This is one of the best 6A games on the board in Week 8. The Eagles surely will be looking to show better than they did in a recent home game against Las Cruces. The Hawks remain very much in the hunt for that overall No. 1 playoff seed, along with La Cueva.
