Preps: J.J. Utash announced his commitment to the University of Texas
Los Lunas’ J.J. Utash steals third base during the second inning of a state playoff game against Volcano Vista last season. Utash has committed to the University of Texas.
While the top three New Mexico prep baseball prospects from the Class of 2026 have locked in with their college choice, the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2027 has now made his.
Los Lunas outfielder J.J. Utash over the weekend announced his commitment to the University of Texas.
He was also considering LSU, the recently crowned national champion, and Arkansas, which also qualified for the Men’s College World Series this summer.
“(On LSU), I was super close,” said the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Utash, a junior. “I was gonna head out there for a visit next weekend. But my agent called me and Texas made a pretty big offer, and I decided to take that.”
The Longhorns have won six national titles, the most recent one coming in 2005.
“Texas has been on my list ever since I was a little kid,” Utash said. “They’re just the best at a lot of sports.”
Getting to learn under UT hitting coach, longtime Major League shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, was also a huge attraction for going with Texas, Utash said.
Utash hit .526 with six doubles, six triples, four home runs and 28 RBIs last spring for Los Lunas.
